Essential ChatGPT Statistics for 2026
ChatGPT has become one of the largest AI platforms in the world and an increasingly important channel for research, discovery, product comparison, and decision-making.
For marketers, its scale matters beyond raw user growth. ChatGPT can influence which brands people discover, which sources they encounter, and how products and companies are represented inside AI-generated answers.
In this continuously updated guide, we track the latest ChatGPT statistics for 2026, including users, daily message volume, traffic, market share, paid adoption, referrals, app usage, demographics, and how people actually use ChatGPT.
ChatGPT Statistics 2026: Top Picks
- ChatGPT has more than 1 billion weekly active users as of August 2026, according to OpenAI.
- More than 2.5 billion messages are sent to ChatGPT every day, according to OpenAI's latest officially disclosed daily-message figure.
- ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app to reach one billion monthly active users, reaching the milestone in May 2026 according to Sensor Tower.
- OpenAI reported more than 50 million consumer subscribers and more than 9 million paying business users earlier in 2026.
- ChatGPT generated 80.48% of identifiable AI chatbot referrals to websites in StatCounter's worldwide September 2026 measurement, ahead of Gemini at 10.91%, Perplexity at 5.85%, Microsoft Copilot at 1.79%, and Claude at 0.95%. This measures referral traffic, not the share of people using AI assistants.
- Sensor Tower measured the market differently: ChatGPT represented 46.4% of its global AI assistant audience in May 2026, followed by Gemini at 27.7% and Claude at 10.3%. These figures are not directly comparable with StatCounter because the methodologies differ.
- ChatGPT accounted for 95.1% of AI-generated website referral traffic in August 2026, with ChatGPT referral traffic increasing 101% from January to August, according to BrightEdge AI Market Pulse.
How Many ChatGPT Users Are There?
As of August 2026, ChatGPT has more than 1 billion weekly active users, according to OpenAI.
That is up from more than 900 million weekly users in February 2026, more than 800 million by the end of 2025, and 400 million in February 2025.
OpenAI's own historical adoption data shows how quickly that growth accelerated. ChatGPT had more than 100 million weekly active users after roughly one year, passed 200 million in 2024, reached 400 million by February 2025, and surpassed 700 million by July 2025.
That means ChatGPT's weekly audience has grown roughly tenfold from around 100 million users in late 2023 to more than one billion in 2026.
- ChatGPT surpassed 1 billion weekly active users in August 2026, according to OpenAI.
- OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users in February 2026 and more than 1 billion in August 2026.
- ChatGPT had more than 700 million weekly active users by July 2025, up from 400 million in February 2025.
- OpenAI's historical usage data shows that ChatGPT went from more than 100 million weekly active users after roughly one year to more than 1 billion by 2026, one of the fastest adoption curves of any major consumer software platform.
How Many Monthly Active Users Does ChatGPT Have?
ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app ever to reach 1 billion monthly active users in May 2026, according to Sensor Tower.
It reached the milestone roughly three years after launch, faster than TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.
This monthly active user figure should not be confused with OpenAI's own weekly active user metric. OpenAI reported that ChatGPT had grown to more than 1 billion weekly active users by August 2026.
The two measurements come from different sources and methodologies:
- Weekly active users (WAU): OpenAI's measure of people actively using ChatGPT during a week.
- Monthly active users (MAU): Sensor Tower's measurement of the ChatGPT mobile app's active audience during a month.
- Monthly visits: the number of visits or sessions to ChatGPT's website, which is a traffic metric rather than a user count.
One person can generate multiple visits during a month, so monthly visits should never be treated as equivalent to monthly active users.
ChatGPT's scale helps explain why it has become an important discovery channel for brands. For a broader framework on measuring whether your brand appears, is cited, and is represented accurately inside AI-generated answers, see our full guide to Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
ChatGPT's growth isn't just about user numbers. It shows how quickly research, discovery, and decision-making are moving into AI interfaces. For brands, that creates a new visibility layer that needs to be measured alongside traditional search. Jere Meriluoto, CEO & Co-Founder of Superlines
How Many People Use ChatGPT Daily?
OpenAI does not publicly report a global daily active user count for ChatGPT.
The strongest official measure of daily usage is message volume.
As of OpenAI's latest disclosed figure, users send more than 2.5 billion messages to ChatGPT every day globally, including more than 330 million daily messages in the United States.
That works out to more than:
- 104 million messages per hour
- 1.7 million messages per minute
- 28,900 messages per second
These figures describe messages sent, not unique users, sessions, or web visits. A single person can send many messages during one ChatGPT session.
For that reason, ChatGPT's 2.5 billion daily messages should not be interpreted as 2.5 billion daily users.
How Many ChatGPT Queries or Messages Are There Per Day?
ChatGPT processes more than 2.5 billion messages per day globally, according to OpenAI.
OpenAI reports this metric as messages, rather than queries or prompts. Not every ChatGPT message is a search query. Messages can include follow-up instructions, writing requests, coding tasks, image requests, conversational responses, and other interactions.
At that level of activity, ChatGPT handles more than 75 billion messages in a 30-day month.
Source: OpenAI, July 2025. This remains OpenAI's latest publicly disclosed daily-message figure.
How Often Does ChatGPT Search the Web?
ChatGPT does not search the web for every message, but web search is now deeply integrated into the product.
OpenAI says ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information. Users can also trigger search manually. When ChatGPT searches, it may rewrite the original prompt into one or more targeted search queries before retrieving information from the web.
There is no official universal percentage for how often ChatGPT searches the web, and third-party studies show that the rate varies substantially depending on the type of prompt, product configuration, and measurement method.
Recent 2026 research illustrates that variation:
- Graphite found evidence of web search in 58% of logged-out ChatGPT responses to informational entity-comparison prompts collected from 31 July to 5 August 2026. Search was detected through exposed fan-out queries or search results, rather than citations alone.
- A separate Zerply dataset measured web search in 32.8% of 5,374 ChatGPT responses in August 2026.
- Josh Blyskal reported that an analysis of 667,000 ChatGPT conversations from his team's database found a 17.4% overall web-search rate and a 53.5% rate for commercial queries. These are database-specific results, not a universal ChatGPT search rate.
These figures should not be treated as contradictory. They measure different prompt sets, user states, periods, and search signals.
The important pattern is that search frequency depends heavily on intent. Current, local, commercial, comparison, and time-sensitive questions are generally more likely to trigger retrieval than writing, brainstorming, transformation, or purely generative tasks.
For GEO, the distinction matters:
Model knowledge and live retrieval are different visibility layers.
When ChatGPT searches the web, current webpages and third-party sources can directly influence the answer. When it answers without live retrieval, the path by which brand information enters the response is different.
For a deeper explanation of retrieval, citations, and how GEO works across these layers, see our guide to Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
How Fast Can ChatGPT Search Visibility Change?
ChatGPT visibility does not update on one fixed timetable.
A brand can appear in ChatGPT through different information paths, and those paths can change at different speeds.
The most useful distinction is between model knowledge and live retrieval.
1. Model knowledge
ChatGPT can answer some questions without searching the web.
In those cases, the response may rely partly on information learned during model training or other model-level updates.
There is no reliable public timetable for when a new webpage, product update, or brand fact becomes part of a model's internal knowledge.
That means companies should not treat model training as a channel they can directly optimize or expect to update on demand.
For GEO, the practical objective is broader: make accurate information about the brand consistently available across the sources AI systems may learn from or retrieve.
2. Live web retrieval
When ChatGPT searches the web, current webpages can influence the response much faster than changes to model knowledge.
But discovery or indexing does not guarantee visibility.
A page may be:
discovered → retrieved → selected as useful evidence → used in the answer → visibly cited
Those are separate stages.
A newly published or updated page can therefore become available to ChatGPT relatively quickly, but there is no fixed period in which it will begin appearing in answers.
The outcome depends on the query, the sources retrieved, how well the information matches the question, and how ChatGPT selects and synthesizes evidence.
3. Tool and agent-based retrieval
Some ChatGPT experiences can use tools, connected data, browsing, shopping systems, or other external information sources.
These workflows can access current information during the interaction, but they should not be treated as one universal “real-time agentic layer.”
Different tools have different retrieval methods, permissions, sources, and latency.
The practical principle is:
Make important information accessible, current, specific, and easy to interpret, then measure whether ChatGPT actually uses it.
ChatGPT Usage by Gender
OpenAI does not collect users' gender directly for this analysis.
Instead, OpenAI Signals estimates usage among people with typically feminine and typically masculine first names. OpenAI reported that these groups had reached approximate parity by 2025 and that users with typically feminine names accounted for more than half of users for whom gender could be inferred in Q1 2026.
This represents a significant shift from ChatGPT's earlier adoption pattern, when usage skewed more heavily toward people with typically masculine names.
OpenAI also found differences in how the groups use ChatGPT. Users with typically feminine names were relatively more likely to use ChatGPT for writing and practical guidance, while users with typically masculine names showed relatively more usage in technical help and multimedia-related tasks.
The important caveat is methodological:
This is not self-reported gender data. OpenAI infers the category from first names, and messages from names that cannot be classified as typically masculine or typically feminine are excluded.
The arithmetic mean of OpenAI Signals' monthly message shares for January to March 2026 was 53% for typically feminine names and 47% for typically masculine names. This is a mean of monthly message shares among classifiable names, not a quarterly share of all users or self-reported gender.
How Do Usage Patterns Differ?
OpenAI Signals also shows that the two groups do not use ChatGPT in exactly the same way.
Users with typically feminine names account for a larger share of messages involving writing, practical guidance, and self-expression, while users with typically masculine names account for a larger share of technical help. Multimedia and information-seeking usage are closer to parity.
These are aggregate patterns, not characteristics of individual users. The purpose of the data is to show how ChatGPT adoption and use have broadened across groups over time.

ChatGPT Usage by Age
OpenAI Signals shows that ChatGPT usage remains concentrated among younger adults, but the audience is becoming more age-diverse.
The age analysis is based only on users who have self-reported their age within ChatGPT. Users under 18 and users without a reported age are excluded from the calculation.
In June 2026, users under 35 generated roughly two-thirds of messages from users with a reported age.
The approximate global distribution was:
- 25–34: ~36%
- 18–24: ~31%
- 35–44: ~18%
- 45–54: ~9%
- 55–64: ~4%
- 65+: ~2%
These figures describe share of messages, not share of all ChatGPT users.
OpenAI's Q1 analysis also found that users over 35 were gaining share, suggesting that ChatGPT usage is broadening beyond its younger early-adopter base.

ChatGPT Traffic and Usage by Country
ChatGPT has a global audience, but usage is not distributed evenly across countries.
Recent web-traffic data places the United States and India among ChatGPT's largest markets, with Brazil, Canada, France, and other large digital markets also contributing significant usage.
Website-traffic estimates should be interpreted carefully. They measure visits to ChatGPT.com rather than total users, and they may not fully capture usage through mobile apps or other ChatGPT products.
OpenAI's own data provides another view of geographic adoption. In February 2026, OpenAI reported that India alone had more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users.
OpenAI Signals also measures messages sent per person rather than raw traffic. In Q1 2026, OpenAI reported some of the largest improvements in per-capita usage rank in countries including the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Japan, Mexico, Tanzania, Brazil, Costa Rica, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, and Austria.
This reinforces an important distinction:
The countries generating the most total ChatGPT traffic are not necessarily the countries with the highest per-capita adoption.
For global brands, ChatGPT visibility should therefore be measured by market rather than assuming that AI Search behaves the same way everywhere.
India Shows How ChatGPT Adoption Varies by Market
India is one of ChatGPT's largest and most distinctive markets.
OpenAI's February 2026 Signals research on India found that the country is its second-largest market globally, behind only the United States, while OpenAI separately reported that India had more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users as of February 2026.
Usage in India also skews younger than the global average:
- users aged 18–24 account for just under half of messages
- users aged 18–34 account for around 80% of consumer ChatGPT messages
OpenAI also found that 35% of messages in India are work-related, compared with roughly 30% globally.
Technical usage is particularly strong. Coding-related use is around three times the global median, while Plus and Pro users in India use data-analysis tools at roughly four times the global average.
These differences show why ChatGPT adoption should not be treated as uniform across markets. The size of the audience, age distribution, professional usage, and common use cases can vary significantly by country.
For international brands, that makes market-level AI Search measurement important. A company can have strong visibility in ChatGPT in one country and materially weaker visibility in another, even for similar products or categories.
ChatGPT Traffic Statistics 2026
ChatGPT remains one of the largest websites and the dominant source of AI-generated referral traffic to other websites.
Website traffic, active users, messages, and referrals are different metrics:
- website visits measure sessions to ChatGPT.com
- active users estimate how many people use ChatGPT
- messages measure interactions inside ChatGPT
- referral traffic measures visits ChatGPT sends to external websites
Keeping those metrics separate is important when comparing ChatGPT's scale and its impact on discovery.
ChatGPT Website Traffic
ChatGPT.com grew rapidly through 2024 and 2025. Similarweb estimates used in our historical tracking show monthly web visits rising from around 1.6 billion in January 2024 to more than 5 billion per month by 2025 and early 2026.
In the first four months of 2026, the historical series used in this article shows:
- January 2026: 5.70 billion visits
- February 2026: 5.35 billion
- March 2026: 5.73 billion
- April 2026: 5.51 billion
These are website visits, not unique users. One person can generate multiple visits in the same month.
ChatGPT Dominates AI Referral Traffic
ChatGPT's own website traffic is only one part of its impact on the wider web.
A second important metric is AI referral traffic, meaning visits that AI platforms send to external websites after users click a source or recommendation.
In August 2026, ChatGPT accounted for 95.1% of AI-generated referral traffic in BrightEdge's AI Market Pulse analysis. ChatGPT referral traffic increased 101% from January to August 2026, including a 36% increase in August alone.
The remaining AI referral share was much smaller:
- Gemini: 2.4%
- Perplexity: 1.1%
- Claude: 0.8%
Together, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude accounted for 4.3% of AI referral traffic, meaning ChatGPT generated roughly 22 times their combined referral share in that dataset.
Source: Brightedge AI Market Pulse.
This does not mean ChatGPT has 95.1% of AI users or AI Search activity.
Referral share measures how often an AI platform sends users onward to websites. It is different from:
- active-user market share
- chatbot market share
- Brand Visibility
- Citation Rate
- total AI Search usage
AI referral traffic also remains much smaller than traditional search traffic overall. BrightEdge reported that AI platforms accounted for about 1.9% of total search referrals, compared with 86.9% from Google in its broader dataset.
For marketers, this creates two separate measurement questions:
How often does ChatGPT mention or cite our brand?
How much website traffic does ChatGPT actually send us?
Both matter, but they measure different stages of the AI Search journey.
For a broader comparison of AI Search traffic, citations, and platform behavior, see our AI Search Statistics 2026.
OpenAI Revenue and ChatGPT Monetization
OpenAI's revenue has grown rapidly alongside ChatGPT adoption.
In March 2026, OpenAI said it was generating $2 billion in revenue per month, equivalent to roughly $24 billion on an annualized basis if that monthly rate were sustained. The company said it had reached $1 billion in revenue within a year of launching ChatGPT and was generating $1 billion per quarter by the end of 2024.
OpenAI's revenue includes more than ChatGPT subscriptions. It also includes business products, API usage, and other OpenAI services, so these figures should not be described as “ChatGPT revenue” alone.
OpenAI also closed a major funding round on March 31, 2026, with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation.
OpenAI Revenue Growth
- Within one year of ChatGPT's launch: OpenAI reached approximately $1 billion in revenue.
- End of 2024: revenue was running at about $1 billion per quarter.
- March 2026: OpenAI reported approximately $2 billion in monthly revenue, or about $24 billion annualized at that run rate.
- March 31, 2026: OpenAI raised $122 billion at an $852 billion post-money valuation.
ChatGPT Mobile App Revenue
ChatGPT's mobile app has also become a major subscription business in its own right.
Sensor Tower reported that ChatGPT generated nearly $1.3 billion in mobile revenue in a single quarter in 2026, more than five times the combined mobile revenue of the other top 10 AI apps in its comparison.
More broadly, Sensor Tower projected that global in-app purchase revenue across generative AI apps would exceed $4 billion in the first half of 2026, up 36% from the second half of 2025.
Statista's AppMagic-based series also shows that ChatGPT's monthly in-app purchase revenue continued rising through 2026 and reached a new high in September 2026.
This mobile revenue is separate from OpenAI's total company revenue. It reflects spending through the ChatGPT mobile app ecosystem rather than all ChatGPT subscriptions, enterprise contracts, API revenue, or other OpenAI products.
ChatGPT's mobile monetization has accelerated alongside its user growth.
Historical AppMagic data published by Statista shows monthly in-app purchase revenue rising from roughly $15.6 million in March 2024 to $108 million in March 2025, before reaching around $227 million in February 2026.
Sensor Tower later reported that ChatGPT generated nearly $1.3 billion in mobile revenue in a single quarter in 2026, more than five times the combined mobile revenue of the other top 10 AI apps in its comparison.
Statista's current series extends through September 2026 and reports that September was the highest monthly in-app revenue point in the observed period, although the exact value is behind its paid dataset.
These figures represent mobile in-app purchase revenue, not OpenAI's total company revenue.
How Many Paying ChatGPT Users Are There?
OpenAI reported more than 50 million consumer subscribers and more than 9 million paying business users in February 2026.
That represents substantial growth on the business side from 3 million paying business users in June 2025, up from 2 million in February 2025.
These figures show that ChatGPT has become not only one of the world's largest consumer AI products, but also a major paid software platform for businesses and professional teams.
ChatGPT Usage Statistics
ChatGPT has become one of the fastest-growing consumer internet products ever launched.
It reached 1 million users within 5 days of launch and 100 million users in roughly 2 months, according to OpenAI. That early growth established ChatGPT as one of the fastest-adopted consumer software products in history.
By 2026, the platform had scaled far beyond those early milestones, reaching more than 1 billion weekly active users and more than 2.5 billion messages per day.
This growth helps explain why ChatGPT has evolved from a novelty into a major platform for research, productivity, discovery, and decision-making.
How Fast Did ChatGPT Reach 1 Million Users?
ChatGPT also scaled unusually fast in its earliest days.
OpenAI said ChatGPT reached 1 million users within 5 days of launch, highlighting how quickly public adoption accelerated. By comparison, Threads later reached 1 million users in about 1 hour, making it an even faster consumer launch.
Still, ChatGPT remains one of the most remarkable adoption stories in internet history because it continued from that early traction to reach 100 million users in roughly two months and then scale into one of the largest AI products in the world.

ChatGPT Market Share 2026
ChatGPT remains the leading source of identifiable AI chatbot referrals to websites in StatCounter's measurement.
In September 2026, ChatGPT accounted for 80.48% of identifiable AI chatbot referrals to websites worldwide in StatCounter's measurement, followed by:
- Google Gemini: 10.91%
- Perplexity: 5.85%
- Microsoft Copilot: 1.79%
- Claude: 0.95%
- DeepSeek: 0.02%
Source:StatCounter
A different view from Sensor Tower shows a more competitive market because it measures a different audience. In May 2026, Sensor Tower reported ChatGPT at 46.4% of the global AI assistant audience, compared with 27.7% for Gemini and 10.3% for Claude.
These figures should not be treated as contradictory. They reflect different methodologies and different definitions of market share.
StatCounter measures identifiable AI chatbot referrals to websites, while Sensor Tower measures consumer AI assistant audience across its mobile and digital intelligence datasets. Referral share and audience share measure different things.
The key takeaway is not that one figure is “right” and the other is “wrong”:
ChatGPT leads both datasets, but the size of that lead depends heavily on what is being measured.
Sensor Tower also reported that ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app ever to reach 1 billion monthly active users in May 2026.
ChatGPT App Statistics
ChatGPT remains one of the world's most downloaded mobile apps.
AppMagic estimates published by Statista put ChatGPT app downloads worldwide across iOS and Android at approximately 87.29 million in September 2026, up from about 78.84 million in August 2026.
Statista's current monthly series runs from May 2023 through September 2026 and shows how rapidly ChatGPT's mobile distribution has expanded since launch.
The important distinction is that app downloads are not the same as active users. A download measures an app installation, while monthly active users measure actual usage during a given period.
ChatGPT's mobile scale is even more significant when viewed alongside Sensor Tower's finding that it became the fastest mobile app ever to reach 1 billion monthly active users in May 2026.
Source:Statista, Sensor Tower
ChatGPT's mobile growth shows that its scale extends well beyond web traffic.
The app grew from only a few million monthly downloads in 2023 to tens of millions per month by 2025 and 2026, while also reaching 1 billion monthly active users faster than any previous mobile app.
For marketers, this matters because ChatGPT is increasingly used across both web and mobile, making AI Search visibility relevant across more everyday discovery and decision-making journeys.
Where ChatGPT Is Heading
ChatGPT is evolving from a conversational assistant into a system that can work across apps, files, websites, and longer multi-step workflows.
In July 2026, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work, an agent designed for substantial tasks that can research information, work across connected apps and files, and create finished outputs such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites. It can also run scheduled tasks and monitor for changes.
ChatGPT's integration layer has expanded as well. Through plugins and connected apps, ChatGPT can now work with services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Outlook, GitHub, Salesforce, and other business tools. Some integrations can also take supported actions rather than only retrieve information. OpenAI Help Center
OpenAI is also investing directly in the infrastructure behind these products. In June 2026, OpenAI and Broadcom unveiled Jalapeño, OpenAI's first custom inference chip, designed to improve the speed and efficiency of running large language models. OpenAI later published initial benchmark results showing higher throughput per kilowatt and lower token latency than the commercial systems included in its comparison.
The broader direction is increasingly clear: ChatGPT is moving beyond answering questions toward researching, acting, creating, and completing multi-step work across other software and information sources.
As ChatGPT becomes more embedded in how people research, compare options, and complete tasks, AI visibility becomes increasingly connected to real business outcomes. For brands, the opportunity is no longer only to appear in an AI-generated answer, but to remain visible as AI systems move further into discovery, evaluation, and action. OpenAI Signals: How People Actually Use ChatGPT
OpenAI Signals provides one of the clearest first-party views into how people actually use ChatGPT.
The current OpenAI Signals v2.0 dataset analyzes a privacy-preserving sample of 300,000 consumer ChatGPT messages per month from July 2024 through June 2026, equivalent to approximately 7.2 million sampled messages across 24 months.
What Do People Use ChatGPT For?
OpenAI groups ChatGPT interactions into three broad intent categories:
- Asking: seeking information, clarification, or advice
- Doing: asking ChatGPT to produce an output or perform a task
- Expressing: sharing views or feelings without primarily seeking information or an action
In OpenAI's September 2025 consumer-usage study, approximately 49% of messages were Asking, 40% were Doing, and 11% were Expressing. This suggests that ChatGPT was used at least as much for information-seeking and decision support as for producing outputs in that study.
OpenAI also found that roughly three-quarters of conversations focus on practical guidance, seeking information, and writing. Writing was the most common work-related activity in the original study, while coding and self-expression represented smaller shares of overall consumer usage.
How Much ChatGPT Usage Is Work-Related?
In OpenAI's September 2025 consumer-usage study, roughly 30% of usage was work-related, while the majority was non-work use.
That figure should be interpreted as a share of usage or messages, not as a share of users. One person may use ChatGPT for both professional and personal tasks.
The current Signals dataset also excludes enterprise accounts and Codex, so it likely understates total workplace usage.
For B2B marketers, the more important takeaway is that ChatGPT is already used for professional information-seeking, writing, research, and increasingly specialized workplace tasks. OpenAI reported that some of the fastest-growing workplace activities in Q1 2026 included content creation, health-related documentation, and information retrieval.
What OpenAI Signals Tells Marketers
The Signals data reinforces an important shift in how ChatGPT should be understood.
It is not only a writing or productivity tool. A large share of interactions involve asking questions, seeking information, receiving practical guidance, and making sense of choices.
For marketers, that means ChatGPT increasingly overlaps with activities that historically took place in traditional search: researching categories, comparing options, learning about products and companies, and gathering information before a decision.
That is why AI Search measurement needs to go beyond referral traffic alone. Brands should also monitor whether they are mentioned, cited, positioned accurately, and visible against competitors inside AI-generated answers.
For a practical framework, see our complete guide to Generative Engine Optimization.
ChatGPT vs Google AI Overviews
ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews both generate synthesized answers, but they do not structure those answers in the same way.
In a 2025 study comparing ChatGPT with search enabled against Google AI Overviews, SE Ranking found that ChatGPT generally produced longer answers with more sentences and slightly more cited links.
- Average response length: ChatGPT 1,686 characters vs Google AI Overviews 997
- Sentences per response: ChatGPT 22 vs Google AI Overviews 10
- Average sentence length: ChatGPT 78 characters vs Google AI Overviews 101
- Links per response: ChatGPT 10.42 vs Google AI Overviews 9.26
- Domain repetition rate: ChatGPT 71% vs Google AI Overviews 58.49%
Source:SE Ranking
The study suggests that ChatGPT tended to provide longer and more segmented responses, while Google AI Overviews delivered shorter answers with denser sentences.
However, these figures should be treated as characteristics of this specific study, not permanent platform rules. Both products change frequently, and answer length, source selection, and citation behavior can vary by query, market, and product version.
For marketers, the more important point is that ChatGPT and Google's AI surfaces should be measured separately. They use different retrieval and source-selection systems, and a brand can perform very differently across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini.
ChatGPT Sources Do Not Simply Mirror Google Rankings
ChatGPT and Google can surface very different sources even when users are researching the same topic.
In an Ahrefs study of 15,000 prompts, only about 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot appeared in Google's top 10 results for the same prompt. For ChatGPT specifically, the overlap was even lower in some analyses. Ahrefs
A separate Ahrefs analysis of 118,931 ChatGPT fan-out queries found that:
- only 6.82% of ChatGPT search results appeared in Google's top 10
- only 16.61% appeared anywhere in Google's search results
- 83.39% did not appear in Google's results at all for the same fan-out query Ahrefs
This does not mean Google rankings are irrelevant to ChatGPT. Search visibility, authority, and web presence can still influence what information AI systems discover and retrieve.
But the findings show why ranking well in Google does not guarantee visibility or citations in ChatGPT.
ChatGPT can reformulate a user's prompt into multiple search queries, retrieve different pages, and apply its own source-selection process before generating an answer.
For marketers, that creates two separate measurement questions:
How well do we rank in traditional search?
How often are we mentioned and cited in ChatGPT?
The two can overlap, but they should not be treated as the same KPI.
